Flyfishing What would I bring for where
Flyfishing flies and tackle recommendations for fish and location
Side Note: My Fly box: Here are many pictures of some the flies I use
- Location: General anywhere minimal Freshwater flies
- whatever
- sz6 beadhead white estaz and white marabou streamer (aka beadhead white streamer), size 10 and sz4 bead head olive wooly booger (ditto in white), 1-80th oz chenelle bug (flame red, florescent yellow, and orange), sz 6 beadhead zonker (1 in orange, 1 in white), sz 8 wooly worm (classic yellow chennelle, red tail grizzly hackle), #6 popper (flo yellow head, black feathers).
- In addition to just fishing the flies, I always bring a series of indicators from pea sized to nickle sized, and split shot micro to BB size. If I had to have only 4 lines to make leaders, I would have a 14lb and 8lb florocarbon, 4lb mono, and 2lb florocarbon. if I had to havetwo it would be 8lb and 4lb. I always start a new big waterway with 8lb and 8 foot straight from fly line to fly, and change from there. Small waters (or for less than monster trout) I start with 4lb straight fly line to fly, then might chop the 4lb to add 2lb tippet if need be. My default rod for freshwater is a 5 to 6wgt 9 foot rod overweighted with a 6 WFF line (cuts through wind, and roll casts well...most shore spots don't have room for a back cast).

- Line: Intermediate or full sinking, 8wgt-10 wgt, long leader (8' 30# then 8' class tippet, 18" to 4' 30# to 80# floro leader shock
- A few flies that have worked in the shallows and over the reefs...The prime flies for ceros, kings, jacks, and yellowtail snappers over the reefs and for mahi and tunas offshore...

- UV Scud sz18, sz6 white or gray weighted (tungsten bead or lead eyes) zonker, 1-80 oz flame red chennelle bug, sz6 bead head olive wooly booger (or olive salmon streamer), sz14 crackleback (green body, brown hackle), and nickle-sized nuclear white (i.e. very light florescent yellow, take peach yarn and expose to sunlight for 1 day to get the color) unweighted glowball (or with 1-80oz jig head), and a white sz6 or sz8 bead head streamer or white wooly booger. If fishing at night, a #4 long shank black bead head wooly booger, and a #6 sculpin pattern. If you feel adventurous, a mouse or skater fly work good in shallow water for aggressive fish. For winter stocked lakes that get slow, use a small dark beadhead nymph.
- Most of the time 4wgt to 6wgt WF floating line, 8ft to 11ft rod, 4lb florocarbon tippet at night, in heavy current, or for larger fish, 2lb florocarbon tippet for most situations.
- beadhead white streamer...beadhead white zonker...>A few good flies including salmon skater, olive salmon streamer, and wooly booger...A fuzzy scud fly, the UV has a shell see glowball in the corner of trouts mouth... one of many possible winter trout black nymphs...A nighttime wooly booger...1-80th oz red chenelle bug(works for most freshwater fish everywhere fyi)...Mouse flies work for trout in the shallows...MAKE SURE YOU HAVE sz18 SCUDS!

- Striped bass, channel catfish (!), white perch, yellow perch, crappie, redbrest sunfish, largemouth bass, northern snakehead, common carp, longnose gar

- I use an 8 piece 5wgt most of the time, but an 8wgt would come in handy for the stripers and larger fish (including large catfish), I use 8lb florocarbon leader and tippet almost all the time, and bring nickle sized indicators. I start with off with the beadhead white streamer or wooly booger and slowly bounce those, then add an indicator 6 feet up to slow the presentation. Orange chenelle bug is next on the list usually.
